First cadet killed was R. A. Palmer (1852). He was killed at Manassas Station, V.A., on July 21, 1861. Forty-nine Citadel graduates gave their lives for the Confederacy. Thirty-six were killed in action or died from wounds received on the battlefield. Seven died from wounds or disease contracted while in military service. (Sources: Oliver J.
