The Shako that is worn here at The Citadel during full dress parades has been used by military personnel for centuries. Beginning in the 18th century, the Shako was standard for most armies, though as time progressed on, new types of protection were created, such as the spiked helmets that began to replace the shako during the mid-19th century.
